Now politicians must take responsibility for ensuring that Sweden's billion-dollar companies are governed on an equal footing. It's time to break the pattern and give women power where billion-dollar investments are lacking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research speaks for itself: companies with high gender diversity in their boards and management are 27 percent more likely to exceed their financial targets, according to the McKinsey report Diversity Matters. Credit Suisse Gender 3000 shows that companies with women on the board have had 14 percent net profit growth, compared to 10 percent in companies without women. A truly diverse board also strengthens the company\u2019s ability to scrutinize management, reduces groupthink and improves governance. This is not about symbolic issues. This is about Sweden\u2019s future resilience \u2013 our ability to withstand crises, provide secure energy supplies, drive climate change and protect critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kraftkvinnor's gender equality report 2023\/2024 shows that the energy industry in Sweden is stuck in its old rut. Of the 290 businesses reviewed with at least five employees, it is still most common for both the chairman of the board and the CEO to be men \u2013 and their names are Anders and Johan. After the 2022 election, the proportion of women on the boards of municipal energy companies remains low, only 24 percent. Only 13 percent of the companies have a gender-balanced board. The proportion of women as chairmen of the board has also decreased from 18 to 12 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite research showing that gender-balanced company boards have a positive impact on results, company boards in municipal, regional and state-owned companies are still dominated by men. After each municipal election, boards are appointed in nearly 2,000 municipal companies, with over 10,000 board assignments. In the energy sector alone, this involves over a thousand positions. These companies manage billions in investments and are the backbone of Sweden\u2019s climate transition. Continuing to exclude women from companies responsible for critical infrastructure is not only ineffective \u2013 a lack of diversity risks leading to poorer risk management, lower innovation capacity, poorer crisis preparedness and greater vulnerability in complex environments where extensive investments are to be decided and managed. An international study from Current Psychology<\/em><\/a> (2025)<\/a> <\/a> shows that gender balance in top management directly strengthens companies' resilience, both through increased stability and better adaptability to crises and disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political parties and election committees have a crucial responsibility. You decide who gets influence over our common funds and billions in investments. The question is: How long will you allow the expertise and experience of half the population to be excluded from boardrooms? Kraftkvinnor's report and international studies show that gender equality is a key to success. It is time to act on the research, not just talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We demand that all political parties nominate both a man and a woman for each board position in municipal, regional and state-owned companies. This is not about quotas, but about the heavy responsibility that rests on the country's elected representatives to ensure that women also have a place where important decisions are made. Nominating committees should submit gender-balanced proposals and politicians should appoint gender-balanced company boards.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is time to stop hiding behind old excuses about a lack of skills \u2013 Sweden cannot afford to ignore the entire pool of skills. Nominating committees must take active responsibility for proposing gender-balanced company boards and ensuring that the selection reflects society. We also demand that all parties publicly promise to implement this, so that we voters can review and follow up on the promises ahead of the next term. When boards do not reflect the population, trust in how common resources are managed is eroded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gender-equal boards are a prerequisite for sustainable social development and economic strength. If we want competitive companies and industries that meet climate goals and drive innovation, we must dare to break old structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We, who represent a number of industry networks for women in industry, among other things, urge you politicians:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Expand and utilize your network, there is no shortage of skills<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Nominate both women and men for each board position<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Promise the Swedish people that you will appoint gender-equal company boards and nomination committees<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gender-equal business community is smart, fair and necessary. The next term of office must be one where our company boards reflect the whole of society \u2013 and where Sweden's investments are given the best possible conditions to grow. Now it's up to you, politicians. Do the right thing \u2013 and do it now. We urge all elected politicians in the country, both part-time and full-time, to sign up to our call so voters can see if you are serious about giving women access to make important decisions for our common future.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
