International Children's Day 2025

On November 20, the UN celebrates International Children's Day to raise awareness of children around the world and strengthen their rights. Children's rights mean, for example, that all children should be able to live a safe life. Every child should have the right to food, clothing and a home.

In 1959, the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted, and 30 years later, the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Both were adopted on November 20th, which is why UNICEF has established International Children's Day on this day.

In Latvia, a ban on all forms of violence against children was introduced in 1998. In Sweden, the Convention on the Rights of the Child became law on 1 January 2020. This was an important step for Sweden to be able to ensure the rights of all children, also internationally. The fact that the Convention on the Rights of the Child is Swedish law means that Sweden can exert pressure to get other countries to do the same and take greater account of children's rights.

The theme for Children's Day 2025 is "My Day, My Rights". The aim is to actively listen to children to understand what their lives and rights look like in practice.
