United Nations Day – October 24, 2025

On October 24, Zonta International celebrates United Nations Day, which marks the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations in 1945.

Zonta has had consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 1969. Zonta International’s former president, Helvi Sipilä, the first female Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, was Secretary-General of the first World Conference on Women in 1975 in Mexico and then spearheaded the establishment of UNIFEM, now UN Women.

UN 80 (or UN 80) is the global initiative and campaign marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations in 2025. It is more than just a celebration — it is a process of reflection and renewal within the entire UN system.

An important theme is how the role of multilateralism can be strengthened, how global cooperation can be improved and how the UN can become more effective and responsive to modern technology, climate change, conflicts and increasing global inequalities. A big challenge. It will be exciting to read the results – Keep posted – we in the UN committee are monitoring and coming back! In the meantime, take the opportunity to check what you know about the UN – try this quiz!
