World Health Day
The purpose of World Health Day on 7 April is to draw attention to various global challenges to public health. The day also marks the launch of the annual World Health Report.
Around the world, millions of people’s right to health is increasingly under threat. Conflicts cause death, pain, hunger and mental anguish. The burning of fossil fuels is also driving the climate crisis and taking away our right to breathe clean air, with indoor and outdoor air pollution claiming a life every 5 seconds.
To address these types of challenges, the theme for this year’s World Health Day is “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.” This year’s theme aims to demonstrate that the health of mothers and children is the foundation of healthy families and communities, helping to ensure a hopeful future for us all.
One of Zonta’s many programs, “Climate Knowledge and Innovation Against Violence,” is benefiting better public health in the countries of Madagascar, Mozambique, and South Sudan. They are some of the countries that are vulnerable to global climate change. The program, run through UNFPA, aims to prevent climate-induced gender-based violence and other harmful consequences. The program will strengthen the role of women and girls as key actors and promote their innovative solutions to build resilience and protection against gender-based violence in the context of climate shocks and crises. The emphasis will be on addressing discriminatory social norms. Read more about the project here:
